Getting started with Hosted By DataTako

With Hosted by DataTako, you don’t need your own Power BI tenant to get started. We provide a fully managed Power BI environment, including a Pro license, so you can upload reports, configure gateways, and manage everything as if it were your own tenant.

This option is ideal if:

  • You don’t have an existing Power BI setup.
  • You want to avoid managing licenses and infrastructure.
  • You prefer a ready-to-go environment to start sharing insights immediately.

By letting DataTako handle the hosting, you save time on setup and administration, while still benefiting from all the features of Power BI combined with DataTako’s secure distribution platform.

Read more about the difference between Hosted By DataTako and connection DataTako to your existing Power BI environment here.

Get started

Navigate to the connections page: https://app.datatako.com/connections/ and click on the ‘I don’t have my own Power BI environment’ ‘Start setup‘ button.

Click the ‘Setup Power BI account’ button at the bottom of the next page:

Now your Power BI publisher account details appear:

Upload your first report

Now that we have our Publisher account, we can use the account details above to log in to Power BI on https://app.powerbi.com.

After you’ve signed in, you will see that there is one workspace with a long name, like:

This is your own workspace, directly connected to DataTako. Upload your report(s) in this workspace! In this example we uploaded the Power BI ‘official intelligence sample’.

Start sharing!

Switch back to DataTako and navigate to the Report sharing page, or directly navigate here: https://app.datatako.com/reportconfiguration/.

Follow the on screen instructions to add a ‘report group’. Then click in the Share Power BI report element in the report group.

In the workspace dropdown you can select the Power BI workspace we looked at in the previous step. After selecting the workspace, you can see all uploaded reports in that workspace in the Power BI report dropdown:

Now, after select the report.. scroll to the bottom of the page to add users/groups to this report!

Thats it! You’re done!

Just to recap. The Power BI details that were provided in step 1 can be used to configure anything you need in the Power BI service, such as gateways, upload reports, set refresh schedules, etc. You can also use this account to directly publish reports straight from Power BI desktop to your workspace.
