Getting started

Getting started with DataTako is easy. Connecting DataTako to your existing Power BI setup only takes a few minutes. After setup you can start sharing reports straight away!

In the DataTako platform you can follow the 3-step configuration wizard to allow DataTako to embed reports for you and prepare your Power BI environment for sharing.

Navigate to https://app.datatako.com/connections/powerbi/ to start the setup.

On the first page you need to select whether you have a Fabric capacity.

To make the most of DataTako, we recommend a Fabric capacity.

If you have (or intend to use) a Microsoft Fabric Capacity, follow the rest of the setup guide here.

Administrative rights

The one-time setup requires someone with enough Azure permissions, the user clicking on the ‘connect to Microsoft Azure’ button (or the external URL) needs to be an Azure AD Administrator, such as:

Application Administrator (limited to app registrations and consent)

Global Administrator

Privileged Role Administrator

Cloud Application Administrator

You are also able to generate a setup URL and send it to your Azure service IT provider or someone with enough administrative rights. Click on the ‘I don’t have administrative rights’ text below the orange connection button. This will expand a new unique URL:

Copy and send this URL to an Azure administrator. Upon clicking on the link they are navigated to a landing page with a little bit more information:

After the administrator clicks on the ‘Grant permissions’ button, goes through the Azure acceptance flow, is then redirected to a new page which will show whether the setup was succesful.

DataTako setup step 2: Configure Power BI settings

You’re almost ready to start sharing reports. In some cases one PowerBI settings needs to be adjusted to enable the PowerBI embedded technology.

Navigate to the PowerBI admin portal or click here to navigate directly. If you don’t have enough permissions yourself, you can send this document to someone with the PowerBI admin role. The next step (step 3) can be done by anyone with access to PowerBI!

Enable/change the following settings:

1. Enable service principals

PowerBI service principal

Set the switch to ‘enabled’ and apply to ‘the entire organization’.

2. Enable embedding
